Dragons have existed as symbols of good luck, harmony, and cosmic balance in Chinese culture for 5,000 years. In Chinese mythology they are divine creatures that govern natural forces, especially water. They are also linked to the ideas of transformation and enlightenment, and are often depicted ascending to the heavens. In another legend called The Story of the Four Dragons, the dragons bring water to the country when it is suffering from a devastating drought and ultimately turn into the four mighty rivers of China.
During the Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE), when Chinese rulers looked to bring good fortune to their lands, the dragon was claimed as a symbol of the emperor. Some 400 years later it would be incorporated into the design of the emperor’s robe as a depiction of power. And when, specifically, the five-clawed, two-horned dragon was made the official symbol of imperial rule during the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), it became treasonous for anyone outside the emperor’s circle to use it.
